Freelander Spotlight Installation
September 20, 2002
By Steve

For this project, I decided I wanted a versatile lighting solution.  I don't want a huge row of lights across the top or a police-style pillar mount manual spotlight. The ideal solution presented itself with the Night Probe remote controlled spotlight from Code 3, a division of Public Safety Equipment.

I called the friendly guys at Amick Equipment and they got the necessary equipment to me as fast and as cheaply as possible.  If you decide to do this equipment on your vehicle, do yourself a favor and deal with these guys.  They are THE most friendly and accommodating folks I've ever dealt with!  These are the kind of people who deserve your business.  They beat the flashier competitor's price by a HUGE margin.

NightProbe NP130H
  • Permanent or temporary mounts
  • 360 degree horizontal rotation
  • 180 degree vertical rotation
  • H3 Bulb 100Watts @ 12.8V
  • 7.25"Wx12"Dx4"H (12"H raised)
  • Wired remote with RF available
  • Paintable Thermoplastic Housing

The installation was fairly simple. As my Freelander doesn't have the sunroof, I chose to mount the spotlight dead center on the roof- far back enough so that it won't contact the radio antenna.  I decided not to use the permanent mounting kit or the hood lip mounts- I drilled 5 holes in the roof instead.  One large hole in the middle allows the wires to pass through and the four smaller holes are for the four mounting screws.

The NightProbe came with a foam adhesive gasket that I adhered to the roof.  I also added a bead of all-weather silicone to seal between the gasket and the base of the Probe.  The headliner had to be removed to run the wires- which run down the driver side pillar.  The power lead goes straight to the battery with a 15 amp fuse, the ground goes to a grounding bolt under the dash and the ignition sensing lead was tapped into the fuse box inside the driver side glove compartment. The controller box was installed under the carpet and the remote control was routed to the centre console.

I can't find pictures of the interior with the headliner removed right now- migrating to a new computer... so I'll add those later.

Here's the finished product:

I actually hope that not too many people do this mod- it's fun being the first.  If you do decide you are interested, feel free to post in the forum me if you have any questions!
