Freelander Protection: Diamond Plate To The Rescue!
April 23, 2003
By Steve

This skidplate was designed by Ron and he was so kind to share the information.  First off, here's a picture of the finished product- then we'll get into how it goes together.

Here you can see the protection of the underside quite well. The entire underside of the engine is protected.

What is important in this shot is that the plate covers the area around the suspension arm mount.  The area just forward of that mount is where the shifter mechanism resides. Many people, including myself, have had problems with debris interfering with the shifter. When this happens, the entire vehicle can go dead and stall.

Want one of these for yourself?  Here's how:

Here's a great shot of Ron's newly protected Freelander in Nevada.

FreelanderLiving.com member Peter (pspeyer) sent in these photos of his custom diamond plate rocker covers. These are better looking than the ones on the Land Rover concept Kalahari (pictured here on the right).  He says that rock sliders are in the works... Hopefully he'll share his source.

There is a good likelihood that these will become available through his friend who makes them. Beautifully done!

Meanwhile, I'm thinking of painting Project Freelander to match the Kalahari- what do you think??

Here is Peter's Freelander being used properly.
